Background of the Study

The purpose of this study is to see how pornographic film exposure affects undergraduate students at the University of Lagos. As a form of communication, film is classified as part of the mass media. As a result, it is linked to the mass media's immense effect.

The media's fundamental strength, according to Burton (2002), resides in their ability to affect what we know about the world and serve as a primary source of ideas and views.

Pornographic films are defined as moving pictures that are primarily intended to elicit sexual desire in their audience for the purposes of this research (s). Soft-core pornography, Hardcore pornography, and Violent pornography are the three types of pornographic films.

Akoto, (2014) assists us in defining these categories by referring the work of other authors. Soft-core pornography, she continues, is meant to sexually stimulate men and women, and it often features nude and semi-nude actors participating in casual social nudity (Williams, 1999). Vaginal or anal penetration, cunnilingus, and ejaculation are not explicitly depicted in soft-core pornography (Dubberley, 2005).

Hardcore pornography, on the other hand, includes graphic portrayals of sexual actions such as vaginal, anal, and/or oral intercourse, cunnilingus, anglings, ejaculation, and/or fetish play, among other things. Many nations outlawed the distribution of hardcore pornography until the second part of the twentieth century, when many governments began to allow certain soft-core content to be distributed. Hardcore pornography's public exhibition and advertising, as well as its distribution to minors, are frequently illegal (Campbell, 2003).

Violent pornography, on the other hand, is a repulsive sexual act. An explicit and realistic act that results in or is likely to result in significant harm to a person's anus, breasts, or genitals is depicted by an obscene character. It can also be an act involving or ostensibly involving sexual involvement with a human corpse. A human conducting or appearing to execute an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal, whether dead or alive, is considered violent pornography if a reasonable person seeing the image would believe that the person or animal was genuine (Bishop, 2011).

In recent years, pornographic films have been created and delivered on a variety of platforms, including DVDs, Internet downloads, podcasts, home videos, and cable television, among others.

Pornographic films are growing increasingly popular in Nigeria, not just overseas porn films, but also locally produced ones. These films are also easily accessible because to the Internet. The Nigerian film industry, which began with films about witchcraft, ritualism, and avarice, has, in my opinion, veered away from these topics in an attempt to imitate the western world.

Pornography is a highly divisive issue. Pornography, according to Wagner (1990), is the realistic written or visual presentation of any genital or sexual action in an intentional violation of established and widely accepted moral and social taboos (as cited in Harvey, 2004). To be classified pornographic under this criteria, a work must breach existing and widely accepted societal taboos in addition to displaying genital or sexual action. Pornography, on the other hand, is defined by Harvey (2004), quoting Hunt (1996), as the graphic representation of sexual organs and sexual behaviors with the intent of triggering sexual sensations. However, determining whether or not a piece of content as pornographic is mostly determined by an individual's opinion of what constitutes acceptable social and moral taboos and whether or not the content breaches them.

Pornographic films have been made for a long time and are extremely profitable, especially with the help of new technology (smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices) and the Internet. According to statistics from the Adult Industry Medical Health Foundation (2004), more than 11 million teenagers aged 12 to 17 years view pornography online. There are 4.2 million pornographic websites, 420 million pornographic online pages, and 68 million daily search engine inquiries, according to the research. According to the survey, 50 percent of males and 20% of women in the church watch pornography on a regular basis. 54 percent of the 1351 pastors polled had watched online pornography in the year leading up to the study. According to Griffith, Mitchell, Hart, Adams, and Gu (2013), pornography has become a morally contentious societal problem, with researchers debating whether it is damaging to individuals who use it.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Film is a highly strong medium that can reach a great number of people, and as the study shows, pornographic films may reach a significant number of people over the Internet. Pornographic cinema is an audiovisual media capable of eliciting the loudest outbursts by depicting pornography, violence, and other immoral behaviors (Harvey, 2004). This indicates that pornographic films have the potent features described by Severin and Tankard, and with their growing popularity, we need to know what exposure to them causes or does not cause.

According to an article written about him in the Los Angeles Times (2007), Ousmane Sembène, one of the best filmmakers to come out of Africa and sometimes referred to as the "Father of African Cinema," thought that cinema is an instrument or communicator of social change and culture. When one considers his description of cinema, one can ask if pornographic film as a genre is truly a vehicle for social change and culture. Because of the prevalence of pornographic films and the need to understand how they affect society, particularly youths, the researcher decided to analyze and explore the impact of pornographic films on the lifestyle of undergraduate students at the University of Lagos. Pornography, according to MacKinnon (1993), is bad to everyone engaged. Despite its pervasiveness, some experts, such as Strossen (1995), have claimed that pornography is not an issue but rather a matter of fairness (as cited in Akoto, 2014).

1.3 Objectives of the study

The main object of this study is to investigate the influence pornographic films on the lifestyle of youths. Other objectives include;

1. To determine extent of exposure youths are exposed to pornographic films.

2. To find out the perception of youths are towards pornographic films.

3. To determine if and to what extent, pornographic films have any affect the lifestyle of youths.

4. To find out why youths watch pornographic films.

1.4 Research questions

The study specifically provided answers to the following questions:

1. To what extent are youths exposed to pornographic films?

2. What is the perception of youths towards pornographic films?

3. To what extent are youths affected by being exposed to pornographic films?

4. What are the factors responsible for the viewing of pornographic films?

1.5 Significance of the study

This study will examine the influence of pornography on youth. Hence the study will be significant to the movie censor board as it will enable them see reasons why pornographic films should be banned.

The study will also be significant to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature and also serve as a guide for further study

1.6 Scope of the study

The study will determine extent of exposure youths are exposed to pornographic films. The study will also find out the perception of youths are towards pornographic films. The study will further determine if and to what extent, pornographic films have any affect the lifestyle of youths. Lastly, the study will find out why youths watch pornographic films. Hence the study will be delimited to University of Lagos. Lagos state.

1.7 Limitation of the study

This study was constrained by a number of factors which are as follows:

just like any other research, ranging from unavailability of needed accurate materials on the topic under study, inability to get data

Financial constraint , was faced by  the researcher, in getting relevant materials  and  in printing and collation of questionnaires

Time factor: time factor pose another constraint since having to shuttle between writing of the research and also engaging in other academic work making it uneasy for the researcher.
